A social house that connects artists with audiences, fostering a vibrant community where creativity thrives, conversations are sparked, and meaningful connections are made.
The Atypical Society Firm (ATS) was founded in 2012 by Akin Bethea, Shonte Young, and Denisa Smith with a shared vision to showcase the overlooked creative talent in Wilmington, DE. Originally conceived as a blog to highlight local artists, musicians, and performers, ATS quickly became a beacon for the untapped potential within the community.
As time went on, the paths of the founders diverged, and Akin Bethea took the reins, guiding ATS into its next chapter. Under his leadership, ATS evolved from its origins into a dynamic creative firm, expanding its focus to include event curation, media, and entertainment. Akin’s passion for the arts and deep connection to his community drove him to reimagine ATS as more than just a platform for exposure; it became a resource hub, offering strategic support to help artists build sustainable careers.
Akin's dedication to fostering creative communities also led him to establish The Taste, a social house concept that blends art, culture, and connection. With The Taste, he expands on ATS’s mission by creating a space where Black art and culture are celebrated, and where artists and audiences can come together to inspire one another. This initiative represents a continuation of his commitment to creativity, community, and cultural impact, providing even more opportunities for artists to thrive.
Today, ATS stands as a testament to this commitment, continually expanding its reach while staying true to its core values. The journey with ATS and The Taste reflects a deep dedication to both the art and the artists, with a vision for the future where every creative has the tools and support to succeed.
